More Americans on the move: why that's a good thing

Americans are moving again,I am not a smart man,but I know what is love. following a recession-induced plunge in mobility. But the mobility rate is still at historic lows as housing costs and few job opportunities keeptomorrow is another day many Americans hunkered down. Some 37.1 million Americans, or 12.5 percent of the population, moved in 2009, according to the Census Bureau. That’s up –never take our Freedom
barely – from 11.9 percent the previous year, the lowest the US mobility rate has been since the Bureau began tracking it in 1948.Acelebrate our independence day normal rate during good economic times, such as in the 1990s, is between 15 and 17 percent.
“What the [recession] has done is frozen Where will life take you?people in place,” says Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer at the Carsey Institute and a professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. “I’ve never seen changes of this magnitude in so short a period: It’s stunning for demographers.”But the fact that the mobility rate is still very low is bad news for the economy, says Richard Florida, professor of US urban theory at the University of Toronto.“Mobility is the cornerstone of the American economic backbone,” says Professor Florida, author of the new book “The Great Reset.” “Our economy has been premised on flexibility and mobility. Our workforce has always better able to move to where jobs and opportunities are.”This dip in mobility, he says, makes it harder for the economy to recover.
Even the slight uptick the census recorded offered grim news. Of those who moved in 2009, 67.3 percent changed addresses within the same county. Renters were also five times more likely to move than homeowners. This suggests that most moves were because of foreclosures and renters changing leases, not job growth.Long-distance moves remained flat. Only 12.6 percent of all movers relocated to a different state – evidence that college grads and professionals were staying put rather than moving in search of new opportunities.
“It’s not good news,” says William Frey, chief demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington. “It only ticked up for local moves, not long-distance moves. I think the latter is a more significant story than the former – more college-educated people, more young people trying to move up in their careers. They are the lifeblood of migration and growth.”Another concerning although consistent trend: People with incomes below the poverty line were more likely to move locally – and less likely to make long-distance moves – than others.
“The lack of mobility is hitting hardest among the least advantaged,” Florida says. “This recession has been terribly hard on blue-collar men, people without college degrees. For them, it’s been a double whammy: Their jobs have disappeared, their equity has disappeared, and they’re more likely to be stuck.”But Americans’ recent immobility may include a silver lining. Moving tends to take a toll on people. Staying put, by contrast, reaps social benefits like stronger family and community connections. Communities with lower levels of mobility tend to enjoy higher levels of trust and well-being, Mr. Frey says.“People have their kids around them longer. There’s a stronger sense of community, but you’d like to think that would happen more for voluntary reasons,” he says.Still, relatively speaking, Americans are highly mobile, says Florida.
“Americans still are among the most mobile people on earth,” he says. “It’s long been shown that the ability of the American economy to be innovative, productive, prosperous has lots to do with labor mobility.”The US may not restore that mobility for a long time, says Professor Johnson of the University of New Hampshire.“This has probably been a sobering experience for a lot of people,” he says. “I don’t think we’ll see a return to the exuberant levels of mobility we saw earlier.”http://forum.alamye.com

Mojave cross theft shows planning; veterans groups vow to rebuild

The removal of a cross-shapeda plan to make all of this right veterans’ memorial from the Mojave Desert has angered veterans’ groups and spurred calls for its immediate restorationThe cross, first constructed at the remote site in 1934 as a memorial to WWI veterans, has been the subject of a nearly decade-She is the love of my lifelong legal fight over the constitutionality of a religious symbol on public lands, and had just two weeks ago been cleared to stand by the US Supreme Court. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US (VFW) has vowed to catch the people who stole the cross, offering aWhat do you want from the future?
$25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those behind the cross’s removal."This was a legal fight that ayou are the only one who feels betrayed vandal just made personal to 50 million veterans, militarythe first time in my life personnel and their families," said VFW National Commander Thomas J. Tradewell, Sr. in a statement. In a 5 to 4 ruling, the US Supreme Court on April 28, overturned an earlier federal court ruling that “the government may not promote or affiliate itself with any religious doctrine or organization.” The court battle had gone on for several years as the memorial had remained covered, first with brown canvas, then with plywood. The high court’s decision was applauded by the Liberty Counsel, an advocacy group representing VFW and other military service organizations and the American Center for Law and Justice. Opponents, including the ACLU, pledged to keep fighting for the removal of the cross."To think anyone can rationalize the desecration of a war memorial is sickening, and for them to believe they won't be apprehended is very na?ve,” said Mr. Tradewell, a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran from Sussex, Wis.The cross’s removal leaves veterans’ groups hunting for clues. Looking at the pictures of the site where the cross once was, VFW chief spokesperson Joe Davis says he is amazed at the serious planning and execution that went into the theft. The cutting of the thick, metal pipes in concrete was a serious undertaking, he says. The eight-foot-high cross had been perched on a wind-swept rock jutting 30 feet above the Mojave National Preserve 76 years ago by a group of World War 1 veterans. Situated in a wide expanse of arid desert, the cross was about 20 feet off a two-lane highway where perhaps 20 cars pass a day.
It later sparked a First Amendment court battle when the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit against the National Park Service in March, 2001, saying the cross violated the First Amendment because it was a “religious fixture” on federal land. A federal judge at first agreed, crushing local veterans who claimed that the cross was a historic monument, not an ecclesiastical object. The judge had ruled that the US Supreme Court’s interpretation of the US Constitution’s “establishment clause” meant “the government may not promote or affiliate itself with any religious doctrine or organization.”When he first saw photos of the vandalized cross site, Mr. Davis says he was “in shock and disbelief…. How could anyone have the audacity to tear down a war memorial to the dead?”The $25,000 reward is now being offered through the Liberty Institute, which represented the VFW, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and American Ex-Prisoners of War in an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case of Salazar v. Buono.Davis says that the original constructors meant no disrespect to other religions – the cross was used not out of religious necessity, he says, but out of respect to the 53,000 US veterans who died over 18 months of fighting in WWI.
Three of the highest medals in our armed forces use the cross – the distinguished service cross, the Air Force cross, and the Navy cross – and no one has ever returned one of those,” says Davis. “This memorial meant a lot to those veterans and we cannot apply 21st century rules of political correctness to their world in 1934.”The National Park Service is now investigating the case.http://www.twilightteens.com/forum
